Waffles

sanctuary resident since May 2025

Waffles came to sanctuary after we saw a post about a duckling with neurological symptoms shared to an animal rescue social media group. At only a few weeks old, Waffles was born with splayed legs and unable to stand. From the images we saw, the type of environment was not suitable in any way for her & the previous guardians didn't have time to care for Waffles. We coordinated their rescue and after a very short time, Waffles was on their way to Free to Be.

The neurological condition Waffles has is in her cerebellum where neurological messages to parts of her body aren't received as they should be causing incoordination and balance issues, likely congenital condition. This presents itself in some of her motor functions to be uncontrolled such as head swaying & leg twitching, which increase & decrease based on her excitement levels making a calm environment of the upmost importance. Waffles lives indoors with Fig, who both have needs that would make an outdoor environment unsafe due to the changing weather, moisture, uneven surfaces +. Inside, they have their dedicated safe space with lots of cushion, enrichment, around the clock care, and supervised time outside for swimming & foraging.

Waffles does not let her condition get in her way and chooses to take the world on with curiosity and wonder. Waffles adores swimming and her friend Fig, and makes every day her day.

Waffles is looking for her special friend!
